Phantasy Star Online 2 will be F2P and on mobile devices

In not terribly surprising news, Sega has revealed that Phantasy Star Online 2 will use the popular free-to-play model for the game. The game will be free to download and play for anyone with item transactions providing most of the revenue for the game.

They’ve also announced that the game is being developed for the Android and iOS markets along with the previously announced PC and Vita versions. So far, the planned released schedule is PC in early summer, mobile version in winter, and the Vita game coming in spring 2013.

I’m not terribly big supporter of free-to-play games as I often feel players end up having to invest more money than normal to see the entire game and its content. That’s not always the case though so hopefully Sega takes PSO2 in the right direction and creates a game that deserves the Phantasy Star Online name. What are all of your thoughts on the F2P model for PSO2?

  1. It’s great news that it is going to be Free 2 Play. My personal experience with titles with that model has always been great, since most developers aren’t so stupid to make any actual content paid content. Normally it’s just costumes or temporary buffs that are paid content and I can live with that.

    • Yeah, I agree. If it’s like Team Fortress 2 where the only time I have to spend money is for costume items that don’t really add to the gameplay I’ll be happy. Sega has done a good job with Spiral Knights so hopefully that’s a good sign for PSO2. I just hope they don’t give people the option to buy powerful equipment or level up more quickly as that could take a lot of the fun out of the game for people not willing to spend tons of money on their character. I doubt that’s what they’ll do but it’s always a concern with a F2P model.

      • I didn’t think if this before but I wonder if this means there won’t be a singleplayer campaign. I’m not the norm but I actually prefer my PSO offline as I just don’t enjoy multiplayer gaming that much.

  2. Since the game is also free to download, I doubt there will be an offline mode.
