Keylogger found in Sonic 2 HD Alpha Release

Oh dear, here we go.

There had been some controversy over the Alpha release of Sonic 2 HD, a large part focused on the lead programmer obfuscating his code, DRM style (ironic given the methods used to create the project), and his methods causing certain Antivirus programs to freak out. For awhile, this was chalked up to it only being a false positive, but as it turns out, they’re legit.

According to Sonic Retro, after working with an antivirus firm and doing their own research, the Alpha was found to have a Keylogging program hidden within the game. While they have no indication that the program has been reporting anything at the time, the capabilities are there. If you’ve downloaded the game, here’s what the fine folks there say to do to protect yourself.

Because this vulnerability has been found, we are strongly advising that the software be removed. You will need to delete the files included with the Sonic 2 HD zip, as well as the registry keys hooked at HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/NakaSMK (if you are unfamiliar on how to do this, go to Start->Run.., type regedit, follow the folder path, and then delete the NakaSMK folder.)

So there ya go. Given all the controversy leveled at the programmer, L0st, as of late, You would have to think this would be the team’s last straw in dealing with him. What are your thoughts on this? Tell us in the comments.
