Sega aims to "win back the platform fans" with Sonic Lost World

SLW Spiral

Nintendo and Sega’s partnership has made a lot of heads roll, and left some of us scratching our own. Both views of the argument aside, I’m interested in Sonic Lost World and just how the game will pan out for old-school platforming fans like myself. Well, it seems that they are hoping to please my demographic as well as the “speed-based” fans according to what Sonic Team head, Takashi Iizuka, said in the most recent issue of Official Nintendo Magazine,

Sonic started out as a platform title but, as we got to the more recent ones, it changed to be a more speed-based game. Recent fans will be familiar with that speed-based gaming, but with Lost World, we wanted to win back the platform fans. We don’t just want old Sonic fans to come back, though: we want Mario players and other platform gamers to enjoy the new game, too.

I’m hoping Sonic Team meets their expectations. Platforming definitely has taken a backseat in some games, or been pursued rather differently than expected. It will be intriguing to see how they bring back platforming in Sonic Lost World.

  1. Now they need to put it on a platform gamers have. But then this does appeal to Mario Fans. Man it’s time for Nintendo to go sega and just do software.

    • Why not just have Sony or Microsoft go third-party? Nintendo makes more profit than either of them when it comes to games alone. They (their gaming divisions) would go under before Nintendo.

      • You’re both correct. That is the unfortunate part. Perhaps this will cause a bump n WiiU sales, but the future is looking grim for Nintendo’s console. The 3DS, however is doing insane business. It may be in Nintendo’s best interest to focus all of it’s resources on being the king of portables. But the shadow of mobile looms large on this entire industry, undeniably.

        • I don’t know if I would say the future is looking dim considering they have a new Zelda, Mario Kart, Mario Land, and let’s not forget the console-seller Smash Bros. on the way. Yeah those are all first party, but those are the series that sell Nintendo systems every generation.

The only way I’m getting this game right now though is on my 3DS because I won’t buy a Wii U just for this until I hear I absolutely need one (I’m looking at you, Smash Bros and Bayonetta).

          • Perhaps you’re right, Scotty. Maybe I’m being a little too hard on them. But until some of their core franchises populate what the system has to offer, it is not selling well at all. We will have to wait and see.

          • Very true! Crazier things have happened. Sometimes I still find it hard to believe that Sonic is on a Nintendo system, and even crazier that he’s one of the better selling third-party supporters.
