Saturn and Dreamcast CPUs to go Open Source

SegaHitachi

With the likes of Elysian Shadows Team, WaterMelon and Super Fighter Team, interest in harnessing the power of older consoles has never been higher. That process looks like becoming easier in the future, if the recently formed Open Core Foundation achieve their goals. They have set out to reintroduce Hitachi’s CPU designs from the 1990s in a license free format. The exciting part is that both the SH-2, the Saturn’s heart, and the SH-4, the power behind the Dreamcast, are on the roadmap. With a stated goal of providing core processors and logic, compilers, debuggers and operating systems, the Open Core Foundation may just stimulate another wave of development on Sega’s systems. Maybe we’ll finally get Sonic X-Treme…
