The Weekly Contest: ToeJam Edition

And the winner of this week’s contest of horror is… Noisetank41! What did he win? A copy of Typing of the Dead for the Sega Dreamcast! This week’s prize was determined by the weekly poll for best “horror” game on the Sega Dreamcast. The House of the Dead series seemed to be really popular with both Typing of the Dead and House of the Dead 2 taking the 1 and 2 spot. The rest of the results can be seen below. Illbleed certainly did me proud coming in at #3.

This week’s prize will be for a copy of ToeJam & Earl 3 for Xbox. The main topic of the podcast this week is a discussion on franchises that made the jump from 2D to 3D and ToeJam & Earl will likely be a game that comes into that discussion.

How to enter:

It’s simple really. At the end of each week (Saturday night), all of the comments left on any post on the site will be totaled up. Every comment you leave gives you one chance to be drawn as the winner of that week’s prize. So, the more commenting you do the better chance you have to win, but you do have a small chance of winning even if you only leave one comment that week.

Comments that are not relevant to a post will not count. They also have to have substance. Just saying “Awesome” on every post will get you nowhere, son. As long as you’re praising the author for a job well done, asking a question, adding some information, or even debating against one of the author’s points, your comment will count.

At the end of each week the comments will reset. Even if you left a bunch one week, you’ll have no entries unless you leave more the next week. But just think if you’re a big commenter you could potentially win four games a month! Wowza!

  1. It looks like the “&” in ToeJam & Earl on the poll is throwing any variable below it off. When you look at the results, it’s just listed as “ToeJam” cutting off right when the “&” would be listed. Furthermore, my selection, which was Shining Force (the only game listed below ToeJam on the initial list) shows up as a complete blank space with 1 vote on the poll. Not sure if you can change it, but maybe making it “ToeJam and Earl” would fix it?

But yeah, between Shining the Holy Ark and Shining Force III, the Shining series definitely made the best jump from 2D to 3D. It’s just been the releases following that have really suffered.

Ecco is a solid runner up, with Defender of the Future a game that was really able to feel and act just like the old games, but with a lush 3D upgrade. Phantasy Star Online is a solid game, but it’s really nothing like the original games, so it’s tough to really include it along with the other games. Sonic’s had its ups and downs, and again, like Shining Force, I’d say the initial 3D games like the level in Sonic Jam, Sonic R and Sonic Advance were all pretty stellar. I might have changed my vote if the version of Sonic X-treme with the Bug! engine was ever released to the public. That game looks so awesome.

When did Altered Beast go 3D?

  2. Fixed the poll but unfortunately it resets the results. Luckily you caught that early though as not many people had voted yet.

Altered Beast has a 3D PS2 game. It was only released in Europe though.

  3. Oh jeez I actually owned tis game and played a fair bit of it

  4. Awesome! I need to find myself a Dreamcast keyboard to type some zombies dead.
