What is Sega Spectrum?

Sega Spectrum

EDIT: The date in the picture is in fact June 12th 2013, which would make it fall in line with E3. Thanks dragonchi26!

A peculiar image has been circulating the web recently that shows the Sega logo as well as an unknown logo and the single word “Spectrum”. The Japanese text translates to “A new world of entertainment.” and carries the date of June 6th 2013.

Is it a new arcade board, some sort of new online service or maybe even some kind of new home console…? And where on Earth did this image come from (I still haven’t been able to find the original source I’m afraid)?

As always, let us know what you think in the comments section below!

  1. Oh god, be a hardcore console. Let Xbox be all things entertainment, let PS4 be an expensive videogame system, let Wii-U be for the fams, and let this be for us! *head spinning*

    • Andrew Nelson June 7, 2013 @ 6:47 AM

that great feeling you get when you turn the new console on and hear people saying SEGA in sync with each other before it loads completely

oh how the days of old where once the very best and will live forever in our hearts

  2. For some reason my first mental association was that Sega Pico (the educational system.)

Spectrum…hmmm just going on the name alone, I’ll take a wild guess and say it’s arcade related and (why not since we are guessing) VR! *drops the mic*

  3. I think the date is supposed to be June 12, 2013. Not the 6th. Which represents what the month is. Hence it being in June. Also that date is around E3 whereas the 6th is not.

I am guessing that this is some kind of Gaming Service. I highly doubt its hardware of any kind. They can’t afford to make a console. They would go bankrupt.

  4. Maybe Sega sold it’s sonic franchise to Nintendo to make up money for money they spent making a new game console.

and maybe they plan to make new games to replace sonic

i mean apparently a new sonic game will be being released only on wii u

    • Michael Westgarth June 7, 2013 @ 1:50 AM

Yep, Sonic Lost World is being developed exclusively for the Wii U by Sega.

A lot of people seem hopeful that this’ll be some sort of new hardware, but it’s unlikely. I think it’ll be a digital distribution system of some sort.

      • Andrew Nelson June 7, 2013 @ 6:42 AM

I can only hope it is hardware. my first proper games console i bought was a sega mega drive. sega may have a new name and new employee’s but lets face it: there are still high up people in sega that have been there for years and maybe in some case’s since the mega drive was created. nintendo may end up in financial problems if it keeps making new Wii consoles. first nintendo makes the piss oh i mean the wii and now they have made the pee yeeeew oh sorry again i mean wii u. what next ?
the wii-ner. my point is nintendo might flop big time and that could free up a position that sega can fill.
but xbox is not looking to good either ( it does look nice) because people are only looking at the potentially bad things about it. they don’t even have the full story and already their having hissy fits

The Wii was one of the best selling consoles of all time and it completely dominated the last console generation. In my opinion the Wii U is just in need of some solid first/second-party games. Sonic Lost World is one such game. I feel pretty safe in the knowledge that the future of Sonic lies with Nintendo

Unfortunately, there’s not going for the Xbox One. Strict online requirements, publisher controlled used game restrictions, no plans for allowing rentals, a Kinect nobody asked for. That’s the full story in the eyes of the consumer, and the consumers are the ones with the money.

          Thanks for the comment.

as of nintendo maybe you are right.

as of xbox one: not everything is known at this moment in time.

i will admit that microsoft are and have been stupid with sending mixed messages. however we still don’t know all the hard facts for sure. at least not 100% sure.
we know that yes you need an internet connection but not 24/7. you only need to be connected to the internet every 24 hours which is quite reasonable as alot of people have internet. even dial up internet should be ok for it to check your online. rumour has it that microsoft and publishers or devs will take a small fee from retailers for used games what this means is that used games will still be able to be sold and there should not be a fee for the new owner of the disc. rentals may work in a similar way to used games.
kinect is sadly required to be plugged in during use however when your not using it you might be allowed to unplug it. even if it is always on it will not have enough power in standby mode to watch and record what your doing but it can listen and yet another butt it will filter out all other conversation apart from when you say something like: Xbox on or xbox play forza 5.

i respect other consumers but they need to wait for concrete information and not just numpty Phill Harrison spouting all sorts of verbal diarrhoea

          • Michael Westgarth June 7, 2013 @ 7:22 AM

I don’t want to be the one to break this to you, so maybe you should just read this:

            http://news.xbox.com/2013/06/main

            It really is that bad.

          • Andrew Nelson June 7, 2013 @ 7:47 AM

oh well. i will still get one cause i have broadband so it won’t effect me too much. kinect does not worry me. just means i will save more money and buy new games. microsoft would not do this dumbass stuff if it was not worth it. yes some gamers may be left behind for the mean time but a lot of xbox360 owners have broadband and so microsoft obviously things it is worth trying to appeal to them. i believe that eventually there will be a day when all the people in the world have fast broadband and then if there is another console released like the xbox one we will look back and laugh

          • Michael Westgarth June 7, 2013 @ 8:13 AM

Microsoft’s track record of knowing what its customers want hasn’t been too good lately. Just look at the desktop version of Windows 8.

It won’t just be a few gamers left behind either. Huge parts of the world are without a well developed internet infrastructure. Microsoft are artificially reducing the size of their consumer base.

Doesn’t sound like a company that knows what its doing if you ask me.

          • I will still get one.

all thats happened is they have became miss-guided as to what to do in order to keep gamers happy.

maybe they will soon get the message and make some tweaks and fixes before it’s final release date.

if they don’t do that i would bet that they will make a second version thats more towards the hardcore gamer and does not require always online. i personally think their partner-ship with EA has damaged them. i think EA got rid of their online passes because the only way to have them as on board as they are would be that dreaded DRM. it sounds like EA and i feel it kinda fits in

anyway i don’t want us to argue as i am sure you are a nice person

          • Michael Westgarth June 7, 2013 @ 11:06 AM

There’s a difference between having a discussion and an argument, and we’re certainly not arguing.

Conflicting opinions make the world go round. It was interesting to read the opinion of a Microsoft fan.

            Thanks again for the comment.

  5. Sega returning to the console market? Something beyond the grave of dream cast? *faints*

  6. Andrew Nelson, they didn’t sell sonic to sega, Nintendo and sega are in a state of partnership right now!!!!!
