Sega announces Sonic Boom game, toys, and tv show

And the internet continues to explode.

Sonic Boom has been confirmed by Sega to be their new franchise strategy for Sonic the Hedgehog. The game itself will be a prequel to the new cartoon debuting on Cartoon Network this year. Along with this, Sega will be debuting new toys, clothing, and other forms of Sonic goodness. Hit that spring jump, because there is way too much for me to go over in just one paragraph between concept art, screenshots, and Knuckles. Dat echidna.

The game has been confirmed to be the final of the three Nintendo-exclusive titles with versions releasing on both Wii U and 3DS. The Wii U version is being developed by Big Red Button, which was confirmed by Destructoid to be led by a former Naughty Dog art director. The 3DS version is being made by Sanzaru Games, who developed the latest Sly Cooper game. Destructoid also confirmed that the Wii U version will have aspects of co-op gameplay. To sum up? Hopefully this game plays like a fast-paced Rathet and Clank.

sonic boom tether

Sega made it a point to note that the game will include traditional elements such as, “speed.” Possibly due to the complaints of Sonic Lost World playing rather slow for a Sonic game. But along with this, they mentioned a new Enerbeam tether mechanic. Whether or not this will be used soley for objects in the game as pictured above, or to tether each character is unclear. Though the trailer below for the TV show does show some tethering elements briefly between Sonic and Tails. Along with the Enerbeam, the game will also include elements of exploration and combat.

Before I get to the cartoon, let’s talk about this:

What. The. Hell. Did he push it even further at the gym even after the Sochi Olympics? Is he part mummy now? Did he share a drink with Bruce Banner? Whatever happened to Knuckles, I’m confused. Maybe kids were confused when he was seen as the most powerful character even with arms the size of broom sticks. Maybe we are getting trolled. Or maybe Knuckles is also a sponsor in his free time for PowerBars. I don’t know. I just had to take a second and talk about Knuckles’ new look. Especially since he just turned 20 year-old.

I love the look of this show. So many things went wrong when Sonic went to 3D on 360, PS3, and Wii, but the cutscenes always looked great. This show looks like it’s going to take the best of those cutscenes and turn it into an entertaining cartoon. The writing was entertaining as well as Sonic aggrivated Robot-sorry Eggman, with nicknames for Burn Bot. I have high hopes for this.

Sonic boom 2

Sega has said that the show will have 52 episodes each 11 minutes in length, and will debut in the 2014/2015 season.

Sega of America President, John Chen also made it a point to state that,

Sonic Boom will not be replacing the original franchise.

So, Knuckles may deflate in a few years.

Lastly, check out some sweet concept art Sega has displayed on their blog from the game and the show:
