Wonderful 101 reportably shipping only 30,000 copies to Japan

Platinum games’ exclusivity on the Wii U is may get off to an underwhelming start after reports that Wonderful 101 will only ship 30,000 units to Japan for the game’s launch. This comes from a story relayed by Siliconera from a Japanese retail blog Sinobi. There are no details of whether this low number is due to production issues, lack of confidence, or something else entirely.

I am immediately reminded of the disappointing sales of Mad World on the Nintendo Wii. What do you guys think about the low number? Do you think future Platinum Games releases for the Wii U will ship in larger quantities?

  1. clover/platinum games have never been best sellers/system sellers (bayonetta, mad world, okami) so i dont see why everyone seems to be surprised.

    • The surprise probably falls around the fact that this is one of the few unique games releasing this generation, not just on the Wii U but in general. I keep thinking that people want something different outside of Mario, and the Duty, but who knows? Let’s hope this does well regardless.

  2. I’m interested in knowing what the percentage of Japanese user base is covered by 30,000 units. As long as it covers 15% I’d say that’s not bad

For me, part of the surprise comes in the exclusivity for the WiiU. I was surprised by the deal due to the low sales of Platinum games on the Wii. I started to think there had to be something with the deal that made Platinum confident in the exclusivity. Then they only launch with 30,000. It makes me think they actually don’t have high projections. It just makes me confused more than surprised.
