Sonic the Hedgehog: Hero, friend, teacher.

The last few years have seen the Blue Blur enjoy renewed popularity thanks to a combination of good (or at least high profile) games and sound marketing. With great popularity comes great branding opportunities. Today’s example: Sonic the Hedgehog for the Leap Frog Didj.

Sonic the Hedgehog for the Leapfrog Didj is an educational game teaching kids spelling through proven spin dash methodology. The game appears to be the possible illicit love child of Sonic the Hedgehog and Math Blaster. Someone is probably writing that fanfic at this very moment

.

Instead of being the abomination you would expect this type of “game” to be, it actually appears to be a quality product as opposed to a cheap cash-in.  Footage in a promotional video for the game uses elements and music from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and 3 and the inclusion of the educational components do not appear to be terribly intrusive. Personally, I think I like the idea of Sonic teaching kids how to spell. All he ever taught me about was sexual abuse.
