Phantasy Star Online 2's service starts in Japan

While we Americans spent yesterday grilling burgers and watching copious amounts of fireworks, folks over in Japan were celebrating something else–the official launch of Phantasy Star Online 2’s service. In celebration of the big event, Sega has released the launch trailer you see above.

While the game operates on a free-to-play model, there is a physical “Premium Version” coming on September 13th that will include five bonus weapons and a “Mag Evolution Device.” Hit the jump to see the cover in all its glory.

There’s still no word on whether or not we’ll see a release in the west, but something just feels right about this one. At the very least, I’m curious to see if a free-to-play MMO can help the Vita’s abysmal sales in the east, especially with the added allure of cross-platform gaming. Even if we never see it on our shores, it should be a very intriguing little experiment to watch.
