This news comes as a result from many people who found it insulting that Aliens Colonial Marines originally had no female characters, as stated by the game’s producer, Brian Burleson in the past. In fact, so many people were appalled by this that an online petition was formed and quickly gathered over 4,000 signature. To be honest, this protest makes sense since the Aliens movies have always be known for having strong female roles. As a result, Gearbox Software CEO, Randy Pitchford announced at PAX Prime that Aliens Colonial Marines will have playable female characters in both the competitive multiplayer and main campaign co-op. Says Pitchford,
We realised some people were starting to feel bad. We exist to entertain people. I want everybody to be clear that there are playable females in both the mulitplayer and the campaign.
One of the characters announced was Jennifer Running, a female marine playable in co-op. Pitchford went on to say that Gearbox waited for this announcement until the character art was completely finalized before showing off any tentative artwork that may have lead to disappoint if taken out of the game’s final release. Does this mean Ripley or Call will make appearances? I doubt it. Not speaking appearances anyway. Considering this last-minute add-on was a result of backlash in the past year, I can’t see them getting big celebrities in the sound booth in such a short amount of time before the release. However! This is a fine example of how some game companies out there do listen to their fans and do everything they can to please them. Good on you, Gearbox! I am so ready to go on this bug hunt.
