Yu Suzuki spoke with Gamasutra at GDC about the future of Shenmue City, which is now called Shenmue Town. He mentioned he had kept other platforms in mind during production, and that the experience would have to be tuned for phones. When asked about the name change he said the name city is too large for the game he created, and that the environment felt more like a town.
It would be great to see this come to the West. It may not be Shenmue 3, but if it does well who knows what could happen? Hit the jump to see all of his quotes from the article.

“I’m imagining since Apple just announced their AirPlay initiative that allows you to play music and send a single out from your phone to multiple devices, that in the future you’ll be able to beam games out of your phone to play on widescreen TVs in massively multiplayer environments. You could play against other people with your iPhone as your controller.”
“From the start, I’ve been thinking of this as a multiplatform game. So I’m thinking about smart phone strategies right now. The experience definitely needs to be customized for the smartphone.”
