I’ve got to say, it felt pretty damn good to relay some positive financial news for Sega the other day. Lucky for me, that happy train is still truckin’, as London 2012: The Official Videogame of the Olympic Games, the latest endeavor proving Sega’s odd affinity for overly long titles, has been at #1 on the UK sales charts for the past couple of weeks. The nationalist hype for the IRL Olympics was bound to kick this game into the upper ranks, so I feel rather silly for being genuinely surprised that it’s been taking home the proverbial gold medal in terms of sales. It’s fortunate, then, that this officially licensed title has been received fairly well, with our own Brett Hatfield giving it a much higher score than most previous Olympic videogame efforts have managed to garner.
Even more interesting is that Sega’s other mouthful-of-a-title Olympic game, Mario and Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, has also been riding the patriotic wave, as it has proudly remained perched at the Bronze metal #3 spot on the UK charts for the past few weeks as well. I had no idea people would be so eager to reenact the big events at home. Hopefully, Olympic fans realizes that an overweight plumber and an anthropomorphized hedgehog will never hit the track in any real-life events.
