UPDATE: This episode has been delayed until next week as Kris is pretending he has finals again and Tom is in San Francisco visiting locations from all his favorite Full House episodes.
This week we delve further into the Acclaim rabbit hole with Part 9 of the Acclaim on Sega series. The games to be discussed are:
Batman Forever (Game Gear)
Separation Anxiety (Genesis)
D (Saturn)
Street Fighter: The Movie (Saturn)
Resurrection: Rise 2 (Saturn)
If you’ve got some questions/comments on these games or anything Acclaim or Sega in general please leave them in the comments below before we record Thursday night.
1) more of an observation than a question: How did Acclaim manage to pay for multiple big name licenses, shit out tons of games in a relatively short period of time and not go belly up until they actually made a good game? (Shadowman)
2) Where does the cast stand on D? I rented it when I was too young to figure out what to do and it scared me more than it probably should have. Is it worth trying it again?
I am pleased to say, I knew right away what Alex was talking about with his Ninja Turtle cat, and I’ve never even owned a cat. [Sega Addicts Achievment unlocked: Mother Knows Best 50pts]
I played D a bit, but I’ve never been a point and click adventure fan. It was just boring. Maybe i’d have been a touch more into it if they’d used real actors, because even back then I thought the graphics were incredibly ugly. Games like this, and Myst are nearly unplayable today, it’s a genre i’m glad to see almost extinct.
I love the idea behind the StreetFighter movie game, I’m sure you guys probably will have talked about it but it’s just so crazy. Lets make a movie based on a game, and then make a game based on that movie, but change the style of the game to another game (mortal kombat). I wish Kevin Bacon was an unlockable character so that we could shoehorn in a seven degrees referance.
Two quick non Acclaim bits:
1.) Sega will not say anything on PSO2, if you visit their official forums, you’ll see that they are getting roasted by fans for being so tight lipped. Is there a legitimate chance it’s going to be cancelled? I’m a bit worried ACM’s disaster has them even more fiscally conservative.
2.) Speaking of ACM, is this Sega’s biggest post-dreamcast screw-up? Where does it rank all-time (for example vs 32x, SegaCD, Saturn launch, Activator etc.)
Thanks guys!
There is a few of these games I can’t comment at all on. But…back-in-da-day the first time I noticed digitized graphics was when I saw SF The Movie game being demo’ed in a game store. To me it looked terrible and had wonky acion controls so I would’nt get any closer.
The game D, I heard was good but found out was a RPG on multiple disks. Being mostly an Arcadee guy, the multiple disks scared me off.
So the question I propose is: would Street Fighter the Movie game been better as a digitized movie character rpg game on multiple disks?
(next week) Thats cool, In high school I used to pretend that I had finals so I couldn’t do homework. ‘;p
