Sony and Sega are to collaborate on a Sonic the Hedgehog movie set to be a hybrid of CG animation and live action. Whilst still early in development, some details have leaked. Evan Susser and Van Robichaux are writing their first feature-length script under the auspices of Neal Moritz, the man responsible for The Fast and the Furious franchise and the recent 22 Jump Street. Of keen interest to Sonic fans in the involvement of Marza Animation Planet, Sega’s in-house CG production studio who created the Night of the Werehog and have a superb track record with cutscenes for Sega’s titles. Leveraging the talents of Marza makes sense in an era when gaming is increasingly crossing media. Sonic Boom has a cartoon tie-in and, most prominently, Halo has gone transmedia with the help of Steven Spielberg. Taking these developments in aggregate it is refreshing to see Sega going all it can to keep its mascot relevant in the 21st century.
