In the wake of the Sega Pluto news that has had us all frothing at the mouth for the past week, it appears that one of the only two Pluto owners in existence has taken this opportunity to cash in on the furor, posting the prototype console for auction on GameGavel. This is not the former Sega employee who first unveiled his Pluto-02, but the owner of Pluto-01, who revealed his console a few days later.
Any Sega collector is sure to be shaking with glee at this news, but I wouldn’t get too excited–the current bid comes in at a whopping $7,600, with an invisible and likely sky-high reserve that has not yet been met. As of this writing, the auction still has a little over four days to go, so there’s still plenty of time to raid your daughter’s college fund, rob your grandmother blind, or do whatever horrible things you do to gather thousands of dollars all at once.
Whoever wins this thing is one lucky (and freakin’ wealthy) individual. This is easily one of the rarest Sega items to have ever existed, and to own it is to own a major unsung chunk of the company’s history. As it says in the auction description, “A true unicorn has risen from its grave within the gaming community, in all it’s glory…and it’s for sale.”

I’m starting to have nightmares about this thing.
