Mention the plot of Alien 3 to 90% of sci-fi fans, and you’re bound to be sprayed by a fire hose of vitriolic, rage-infused stomach bile. Personally, I don’t have too strong an opinion either way. Give me the first film and a Preying Mantis Alien toy and I’ll be happy in my little corner. Still, the last time I brought up the controversial demise of Hicks, Newt and Bishop to a group of friends, I was picking out bits of acidic vomit from my hair for days afterwards.
Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford feels the public’s pain/nausea, and is promising that the details of Colonial Marines’ story will help to tie up some of Alien 3’s infamous loose ends.
One of the things we’re really proud about is that there were some things that fans like us always believed were inconsistencies between Alien3 and Aliens, but as we dig into it, as we work with filmmakers and kind of understand it all and think about it from a logic problem point of view, there is actually a truth there that makes more sense. When we are able to use it to stitch it together, Alien3 is actually a better movie.
Regardless of how you react to that polarizing film, it’s still incredibly exciting to see that Gearbox is so dedicated to weaving Colonial Marines into the Aliens lineage, not as some simple spin-off game, but as a valid, plot-progressing addition to the series lore. Who knows, maybe this validation will finally get people to stop vomiting on me every time I bring the movie up.
What do you guys think? Excited to see Colonial Marines filling in the holes? Just wish people would forget Alien 3 ever existed? Just please–don’t vomit on me.
